The books a child hears at three and four become the furniture of their mind — so it's worth being fussy about which ones get in.
💛 Why human stories for human children ▾
Open most modern children's books and you'll find talking animals — ducks who go to school, bears with feelings, rabbits who won't nap. A little of it is charming. But a child's world is almost entirely made of it, and that's odd, because our children are not ducks or ants. They are small humans, learning to be human.
A story is how a young child rehearses being a person — courage, kindness, fear, friendship, loss, home. Human stories let them try those on directly, in bodies like their own. You can't cut every animal out, and you needn't. But a real share of what they hear should be humans doing human things, so the mirror they're handed actually reflects them.
