Essential Items

Ten things that change everything — then the rest of what you actually need.

Most of what you get sold makes no difference at all. A handful of things make an enormous one, and nobody tells you which is which until afterwards. So this page is split in two: the small number of items that change what an entire stage feels like, and underneath them the routine kit — the rest of what you genuinely need, including the things nobody warns you about until the week you needed them.

How this list is built

Everything here earns its place by changing what a normal day feels like, not by being nice to own. Each item says what it is, why it works, and what to look for — so you can buy it anywhere, second-hand where that makes sense, or make it yourself.

There are no affiliate links and nothing here is paid for or sponsored. At the bottom is the other half of the advice: the things you can safely skip.

The lifechangers

The test for this list is deliberately brutal: if you can picture doing the stage without it and the days look roughly the same, it does not go on. These are the ones where the days genuinely do not look the same. Between them they cost less than a pram.

🎒 The routine kit

The rest of what you actually need, by stage. Still filtered — this is not a shopping list. A good part of it is the category nobody warns you about: the small ordinary things whose absence produces a bad evening.

Things you can skip

Saying what not to buy is worth as much as saying what to buy, and it is the part nobody selling anything will tell you.
